Role Summary:

From network activities such as the dispatching of trains to intermodal terminals where these trains are built—efficiency is key. As Sr. Data Scientist - Operations Research, you will work closely with product managers, owners, and engineers to develop and implement cutting-edge network planning and optimization algorithms. You will also be responsible for interacting with operations research experts and universities in developing state of the art algorithms and solution techniques.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop optimization models and analytics to address customer needs and opportunities

  • Work alongside software developers and software engineers to translate algorithms into commercially viable products and services

  • Work in technical teams in development, deployment, and application of applied analytics, predictive analytics, and prescriptive analytics

  • Perform exploratory and targeted data analyses using descriptive statistics and other methods

  • Work with data engineers on data quality assessment, data cleansing, and data analytics

  • Generate reports, annotated code, and other projects artifacts to document, archive, and communicate your work and outcomes

  • Share and discuss findings with team members


Basic Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics or Computer Science

  • GE Leadership Program Graduates will get credit towards relevant work experience, commensurate with the program they have completed

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Legal authorization to work in the US is required. GE may agree to sponsor an individual for an employment visa now or in the future if there is a shortage of individuals with particular skills.

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Chicago, IL or Melbourne, FL

  • Must be willing to travel

Desired Characteristics:

Technical Expertise:

  • Minimum of 5 years of software development experience in optimization/network modeling with emphasis on algorithm/heuristic implementation

  • Experience in using optimization suites such as CPLEX or Gurobi

  • Experience in object-oriented programming such as Java, C#, or C+Domain Knowledge:

  • Model large-scale transportation network and terminal operations to optimize efficiency

  • Collect and analyze operational data to determine the effectiveness of optimization models and algorithms

  • Implement proof of concepts to help make technology choices and validate modeling assumptions

  • Liaise with customer operations researchers and subject matter experts to improve algorithm effectiveness against Key Performance Indicators

  • Work with the GE software product owners to identify model and algorithm behaviors which are common across the industry

  • Automation experience is a plus


  • Demonstrated skill at functioning in a team setting

  • Demonstrated awareness of critical thinking and problem-solving methods

  • Demonstrated awareness of presentation and influencing skills
